Mission Statement

The Mission of the Department of Fish and Game is to manage California's diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public.

Major Projects

Development and implementation of the California Coastal salmonid Monitoring Plan (CMP). Conducting spawning ground surveys to count live Chinook and coho salmon and steelhead and their nests in 1 to 4 km reaches located in streams throughout coastal Mendocino County, usually from late-November to mid-April. Operating salmonid Life Cycle Monitoring Stations (LCS), adults in and smolts out mid-November through late-May, in two streams and collaborating with our partner, Campbell Timberlands Management to operate a third to understand salmon survival and population trends. The LCS work includes capture, marking, releasing, and recapturing adult and juvenile coho salmon and steelhead. We are using some sophisticated electronic tagging and detection techniques for this work. Conducting habitat assessment during summer and fall.

Examples of Work

The WSP members at this site have assisted with data collection for monitoring coastal salmonids and their habitats. They conduct outreach and education tied directly to our monitoring activities in the real science education requirements context. Members have done gorse removal and various other watershed restoration activities.
