Mission Statement
The Mattole Salmon Group works toward the recovery of the native salmon populations and human communities of the Mattole River Watershed through: habitat restoration and watershed monitoring according to the latest available scientific research, community outreach and education to increase local knowledge of our unique watershed, and community building by increasing sustainable, restoration-based employment opportunities to rural residents.
Major Projects
Habitat Enhancement: Complex large wood structure construction and placement in the Mattole River mainstem, estuary, key tributaries, and headwaters reaches.
Habitat Monitoring: Water quality monitoring in the Mattole River estuary and headwaters; temperature monitoring and habitat assessment throughout the mainstem Mattole River and key tributaries.
Population Monitoring: Juvenile population assessment through Downstream Migrant Trapping as well as semi-annual snorkel dive surveys throughout the watershed and weekly dives in the estuary during the field season; adult population assessment through fall/winter spawner surveys and annual summer steelhead dives.
Outreach and Education: Participate in a variety of local and regional outreach events; annually host a community outreach event; educate local youth on salmon and watershed issues through classroom lessons and field trips as part of the Mattole Ecological Education Program.
Examples of Work
AmeriCorps members have been involved in a variety of projects including website development, newsletter creation, and other brochure and outreach material development.
In the field, AmeriCorps are actively involved on nearly every project: spawner survey, DSMT, Estuary Water Quality Monitoring, Dissolved Oxygen Monitoring, Temperature and Dive surveys, and the Summer Steelhead Dives.
